This is a warm up exercise to prep me to write Chapter 58 of my novel. It's a free write... no editing.
The sky blue like a raspberry snow cone with half the juice sucked out. Mid afternoon, the sun closer to set than they were used to at that time of day. Still warm enough for short sleeves, but winter on Pennsylvania's breath. Two hands worth of fingers plenty to count the clouds in the sky, white and grey boardered in lavender and purple.
Down below on the field, the team was taking batting practice. Laughter and joking and oohing and aahing from the players on the field shagging balls. Every ten seconds or so, the tinny clap of the ball colliding with an aluminum bat, followed immediately by its echo.
There are no more games, the Final Exam capped off the season over a week ago. The team got together to hit. Not to prepare for anything, unless they were thinking of next spring. Teams would sign up in the restaurant for two hour slots on the weekends at this time of year to work on fielding or take batting practice. Nobody wanted to tuck their cleats and bat and glove on the floor in the corner of their room, on a shelf in the closet, or on the floor in the basement. Baseball season didn't end until they stopped taking the field. Fall's chill and winter's freeze were out of play, beyond the trees, poorly hidden. Easy to see, if somebody wanted to look for them.
